His family splits along how much they allow NML to change them, though some things like Alfred never change. There's the ongoing subplot of the GCPD retaking the city block by bloody block, and behind it all is the looming threat of The Joker, whose conspicuous absence is no source of comfort for the Dark Knight.
Don't get me wrong, Grant Morrison's meta-take that "everything counts" is still my favorite canon iteration of the character, but serialized Bat-storytelling doesn't get much better than NML.
No Man's Land might be my favorite too. That issue dedicated just to Batman and Gordon talking really sealed the deal for me. So much good stuff in there.
I was and am such a fan of Azrael-Batman. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they went back to Bruce, but Jean-Paul was a much needed change at the time.
There is a lot of good but there is a lot of filler as well. Some of that filler is hit or miss for me. Im gonna say the most non obvious books.
Guess I might check it out. White Knight. A badass intimidating crime-fighter by night and a Philanthropist by day.
It was a great vertical slice of Batman which was wrapped around a poignant story on the circle of crime. I love that one. It's the perfect distillation of everything that Batman is down into a single issue.
His crazy preparation of memorizing every street and alley. His compassion for the people impacted by crime, and his understanding that people are often forced into crime by an uncaring system.
I hold that book up as the perfect rebuttal to most criticisms of Batman, that he just likes punching poor people, or that he could do so much more good with his money.
It really is a perfect standalone comic. And that's not even talking about Alex Ross's incomparable art. It was stunningly beautiful and a nice break from the maniac of the week model that dominates most comics.
I also really love the themes of redemption. I think Long Halloween and Dark Victory do a fantastic job of telling a rooted 'crimefighter-philanthropist' tale but they lacked War on Crime's heart.
However, both Halloween and DV are easily some of my most loved Bat novels because of the classic vigilante aspect and Tim Sale's stunning art.
Arkham Asylum is by far my favorite. Glad Tom King gets a little love. Say what you want but he's had some really great arcs so far.
Side note: When I think of Batman's "voice", Jeph Loeb is probably the closest to capturing his intelligence and personality. It seems try-hard.
Actually feels like a genius and not a writer pretending to sound like a genius. Miller too angry, but still awesome.
Venom is a great story which I love for all those reasons that you pointed out. Giving some love for The Cult.
Gotham taken over by s religious group with that edgy artwork was perfection. The Cult is my favorite by far. The art is some of my favorite Batman art except for the questionable choice of a giant Deacon Blackfire penis-shaped totem.
I also love The Button idk if that counts. It's always going to be Hush. Perfect art, and all the characters that matter to the mythos.
The DC metal books were extremely satisfying. Not really a sole Batman story because of JL's involvement. They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed speak not a whispered word of them or they'll send the Talon for your head.
Very good writing and addresses one of Batman's criticisms as an effective superhero. Perhaps cheating a bit but Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison.
No Mans Land.. I think it really highlights the symbiotic relationship between bats and joker.
Long Halloween, love the long ears and bellowing cape design of batman along with the amazing story.
I think that the Ten Nights of the Beast storyline is one of the best Batman storylines. If memory serves, it introduces KGBeast and has one of the best endings of a Batman storyline.
I would highly recommend it. It's issues I think. City of Crime by David Lapham is nearly perfect, it gets every aspect of what a Batman story can be, starting out street level, going to high-level supervillains in the middle and then ending up as a crazy almost Lovecraftian monster story while keeping Batman and his setting strongly characterized and grounded the entire time.
Second favorite is Broken City by Azzarello, for being just a good hard-boiled detective story with Batman in it.
There's quite a few but have to mention Paul Pope Batman Year Awesome story and no Bruce Wayne in sight. The Black Mirror jumps to mind.
For me, it is easily the best Dick Grayson story ever though please recommend others! The introduction of Bane was fantastic and the cover for pt.
Definitely either Long Halloween or Hush. I actually really enjoyed the sheer ridiculousness of End Game. I don't know if it is my favorite, but it's up there.
Hush, Jim lee art is iconic. Then to have almost all the major rogues in it makes it pure art. Story is written well too.
War games, I love the dynamic of showing the strain in the alliances in the bat fam. Plus I'm a big Tim Drake fan so it's cool to see a solid chunk dedicated to him.
Batman Eternal is pretty awesome in my opinion. Great read that keeps you on edge and guessing the whole time.
Batman Incorporated is really good. The Black Mirror. It might not be the best Batman story ever, but definitely the best storytelling ever.
Kudos to Snyder and team. I actually liked reading all of No Man's Land. Including the tie-in. Gotham City became a living, breathing character.
Surprisingly issues 51 to 53 from Tom Kings run are climbing the list for favorites. I'm also a sucker for Long Halloween. All sizzle and no steak.
Just as something cool was happening the story moved on to some other cool looking thing with no fulfilling arc. Really soured me on getting back in to comics if I'm going to be completely honest.
Doomsday Clock has been interesting though. Ugh, I wanted to like Metal soooo bad but it just didn't do it for me.
Recently picked up a number of these trades. I'm reading Batman, Inc. Edit: Wow I am literally the only person that said this.
It gave me chills and pushed the Batman and joker relationship to visceral levels. Joker became a full blown horror villain and that is by far my favorite route to take with his character.
Hush comes in at third. I'm always looking for recommendations though as I haven't read that much Batman.
It's called something like that It's all set in arkham asylum and Batman is just an ominous black shape.
Which is weird because in both the characterization of Scarecrow my favorite was a bit off from the regular portrayal.
But the stories are just that good. Also, in Dark Victory the look on Joker and Scarecrow's faces when Harvey just kills Janice is so priceless that it made the book for me.
But year one, god damn. One of the first arcs I bothered reading out of curiosity and is what rralky got me into comics, it's just too good.
May not be the most popular option but I really liked War Games. It was crazy seeing one of Batman's biggest contingencies go horribly wrong in every way possible.
Long Halloween is a classic but I'll always have a soft spot for Knightfall since that's what got me into Batman comics. I re read Long Halloween and Dark Victory the other day and remembered how amazing it is from start to finish.
A true Batman story. This gets my vote. It was one of the first graphic novels I ever read and it's stuck with me ever since.
The art is great, the story is complex without getting confusing imo, and it's an interesting trip into Batman's psyche and his various guilt complexes.
Why does it matter if it's "elseworlds"? DKR is what made Batman the character he is today. Continuity is nonsens, what matters is that the story is good.
Knightfall has a special place in my heart. I still have most of the original issues. It gave me nearly the same feelings as reading the Superman Doomsday timeline back in the day.
Both were devastating. Court of Owls is amazing. You think you know all about Batman mythology, then something new comes out thats next level.
Scott Synder's stories in new 52 are amazing. Long Halloween is definitely the best Story out of those three. Snyder's Endgame - I feel like fans either loved or hated this title, but for me, the whole arc felt like a blockbuster movie.
All the twists and cliffhangers issue-to-issue. I just loved every second of it. First is hush, my personal favorite, and then followed by long Halloween.
